Heritage Sandy Springs Museum and Park to Unveil a New Exhibit in September
Grit, Gumption, and Grace: The Women of Sandy Springs
Heritage Sandy Springs Museum and Park, whose mission is dedicated to preserving the history of Sandy Springs, will unveil its newest community exhibit September 28-29, during the 34th annual Sandy Springs Festival. In collaboration with the Roswell Historical Society and the Marietta Museum of History, Grit, Gumption, and Grace: The Women of Sandy Springs is the first exhibit of its kind at the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum.
The new exhibit highlights the roles and accomplishments of women in the community and salutes the many contributions of women to the city of Sandy Springs, including their roles as settlers, educators, activists, doctors, philanthropists, and more.
“The exhibit shines a spotlight on the achievement and voices of women throughout the history of Sandy Springs,” said Keith Moore, Heritage Sandy Springs Museum and Park Director of Curatorial and Educational Affairs. “This exhibit features tools, textiles, photographs, manuscripts, and more to highlight the role that women have played in the formation of Sandy Springs as both a community and city. As part of our ongoing initiative to record Sandy Springs history through storytelling, visitors to the exhibit will be able to listen directly to the memories of specific women for the first time on oral history stations. We’re excited to bring these oral histories to life in as many ways as we can.”
The exhibit includes women who have left their mark in the community, including the first Mayor of Sandy Springs, Eva Galambos, as well as, Harriet Austin Williams, Nellie Jet, Mary Jane Wells, Dr. Leila Denmark, and more.
The exhibit will be unveiled in the newly renovated Heritage Sandy Springs Museum, housed in the 1869 Williams-Payne Farmhouse at Heritage Green.
Grit, Gumption, and Grace: The Women of Sandy Springs will be free of charge and open to the public September 28-29, with extended hours 10-6 on Saturday, and 10-4 on Sunday. It will otherwise be open during the Museum’s normal operating hours, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10-2 p.m. from October 1, 2019, until October 1, 2020.
